More Third Downs Conversions

The old regime’s third down conversions took a nose dive last season like the rest of the offense.

In 2016, the FSU offense converted third downs 43.79 percent of the time but dropped to 35.19 percent in 2017.

That’s a two-year running average of 39.49 percent.

Willie Taggart’s offenses the last two season have converted third downs at 41.01 percent and 44.21 percent.

That’s a two-year running average of 42.61 percent.

I’m only going back two years because that’s about when Taggart adopted the Gulf Coast offense he runs which is most similar to what he’ll run at FSU.

Taggart’s offense is more run oriented which should result in fewer plays for negative yards overall and most importantly less sacks.

That should result in more favorable third down situations with a higher probability of converting the first down as the numbers indicate.
