More Touchdowns/Less Field Goals

One criticism of the old regime was the absurd reliance on too many field goals. It would be fourth and 2 or less and the old regime would settle for a 52 yard field goal attempt or punt.

Luckily the Noles have had reliable field goal kickers with Graham Gano, Dustin Hopkins and the Aguayo brothers. However, three points isn’t enough in today’s college football landscape.

Also, the decision to punt when inside the opponents 40 yard line made little sense when the end result would only be a net of about 20 yards of field position.

Willie Taggart doesn’t kick many field goals and will elect to go for it more often on fourth down in the right situations. That means more opportunities to score touchdowns in the red zone.

Here’s the last two years of Willie Taggart/Jimbo Fisher:

  • Fisher (105 red zone trips, 75 touchdowns, 71 percent) 49 FG attempts
  • Taggart (106 red zone trips, 79 touchdowns, 75 percent) 25 FG attempts

Fisher’s offenses probably faced tougher defenses, but Taggart didn’t have the same amount of talent on offense either.
