FSU football got its first win of the season against previously undefeated Wake Forest. We have the play-by-play and reaction.
FSU football traveled to Winston-Salem, North Carolina, to look for its first win of the season. It wasn’t pretty, but they got the job done after an awful start.
1st Half
The first play of the game was a sign of things to come. Derwin James took the opening kickoff back for a 101 yard touchdown only to have it called back by a penalty.
The ‘Noles then went promptly with a three and out. Both teams looked inept offensively early with the ‘Noles taking an early lead on a field goal. However, a FSU fumble got Wake Forest back in the game with a field goal of their own.
The teams traded touchdowns and FSU got a late field goal in the half on a monster kickoff return by Keith Gavin to lead 13-12 at the half.
Wake Forest had the ball for seven offensive possessions and had 181 yards at the half on 34 plays for 5.32 yards per play.
FSU had 108 yards on 29 plays for 3.72 yards per play. The scary part was 69 of those yards came on one run by Jacques Patrick.
Second Half
Wake Forest received the ball to start the half and the ‘Noles forced a punt after a 30 yard run by the Demon Deacon QB. FSU then got its running game going on a 60 yard drive and scored a touchdown, only to have it wiped away by a penalty.
They had to settle for another Ricky Aguayo field goal to go up 16-12 with 4:18 left in the third. FSU then squandered a fumble recovery by the defense that lost nine yards on the drive. This football team is lost, completely lost.
Wake Forest started the fourth quarter near the red zone. The FSU defense had the Wake Forest QB dead to right on a sack and somehow he threw a pass to the fullback for a huge gain.
Wake Forest scored on a running play two plays later to make it 19-16 with 13:57 left in the game. The ‘Noles responded on the next drive when James Blackman hit Keith Gavin for a 43 yard gain on third and 20 to keep the drive alive.
FSU tied the game 19-19 with a field goal from Ricky Aguayo with 6:20 left in the game. The FSU defense forced a three and out on the Wake Forest possession and got the ball with 4:58 left in the game.
