Winning Super Regionals

FSU’s ability to fight through the losers’ bracket to win their regional along with Texas Tech’s failure to win theirs, granted the Noles the opportunity to host a super regional. FSU got matched up with a Cinderella of sorts in Supers when they faced the Bearkats of Sam Houston State University.

The atmosphere at Howser was a great one as fans were happy to be hosting Supers when at one point it was unclear if FSU would make the post season. Despite the great atmosphere, things got off to a rocky start for the Noles against SHSU. Sam Houston’s unique offensive approach of bunting and being aggressive on the base paths gave FSU baseball fits in the first inning and allowed SHSU to take a 3-0 lead. The Bearkats were aided by uncharacteristic errors by pitcher, Tyler Holton.

Going into the bottom of the 5th inning, the Noles were trailing 5-2. A Jackson Lueck RBI single cut the lead to 5-3. SHSU would add a run in the 7th when Holton walked in a run to make it 6-3. In the bottom of the frame, FSU came up with three straight RBI singles to tie the game at six and get the fans on their feet. Jackson Lueck took care of the rest when he sent Howser into a frenzy with his fourth hit and RBI of the day to give FSU the 7-6 walk-off come from behind victory.

Day two of Supers came with a seven hour rain delay. It had no effect on the Noles though,  as Taylor Walls lead off the game with an opposite field home run. FSU baseball never looked back and cruised to a 19-0 victory earning their first College World Series berth since 2012.
