FSU basketball alum Al Thornton, who was one of the best players for the Seminoles over the last two decades, will take part in the new Big3 League.

Before there was Jonathan Isaac, Dwayne Bacon or even Malik Beasley, the best FSU basketball player this decade was Al Thornton. The forward from just up the road in Georgia came to Tallahassee and left as following a senior season in 2006-07 that saw him finish runner up for ACC Player of the Year along with being first team all conference and a third team All-American.

Fast forward a decade later and Thornton has returned to basketball in America – in a smaller version. Drafted 14th overall by the Los Angeles Clippers, Thornton spent the following four seasons in the NBA with the Clippers, Washington Wizards and Golden State Warriors before embarking on overseas basketball that took him to Puerto Rico, China and the Philippines.

Sunday, the FSU grad stepped on the court inside the Barclays Center in Brooklyn to take part in the new Big3, the first American professional basketball league where eight teams – led by NBA legends and with rosters stacked with names fans will remember – will compete in three on three, half court games across the country for eight weeks before a playoff weekend and the eventual championship game on August 26th in Las Vegas

Thornton has been placed on the team named 3’s Company – being led by player/coach Allen Iverson:

On Sunday, the schedule began with Thornton’s team taking on Ball Hogs, led by capital Brian Scalabrine and coached by Hall of Famer and NBA champion Rick Barry. Thornton finished the day with 13 points as 3’s Company won the game. You can watch the action Monday night at 8 p.m. on FS1.

The league will be spanning the country over the next seven weekends, with stops in Charlotte, Tulsa, Philadelphia, Chicago, Dallas, Lexington, KY and Los Angeles. The league was the brain child of legendary rapper Ice Cube with the intent of having fun bought back into professional basketball. You can find more about the league by going to their website.
