Mark Richt showed just how far the Hurricanes have fallen when he was honored by the city of Miami months after going 9-4 and actually winning a bowl game.

It wasn’t all that long ago that players, coaches and teams were honored by the city they played in or represented for winning championships. Tallahassee has partied three times when the Seminoles have won the national championship. The city of Miami hasn’t been able to do that for the Hurricanes in a decade and a half, but that didn’t stop them from honoring head coach Mark Richt last week.

That’s right – after just one year on the job, Richt was given the key to the city by commissioners last week. Showing just how bad things have gotten in the 305 with the once proud college football power, a 9-4 record (which included a seventh straight loss to their biggest rival) and third place finish in the ACC’s Coastal Division gets you honored at this point.

But hey, they did win the first bowl game for Miami in a decade, so let’s party everyone!

Of course, the event – thrown together by city commissioner Francis Suarez, someone who it shouldn’t be much of a shock that (like most of their fans) went to FIU and not UM – gave Richt a chance to throw some shade at other programs in the recruiting game, particularly fellow ACC schools like Clemson (h/t Palm Beach Post):

"“They can have all they want. I mean, there’s schools building slides and playgrounds in their building, just so they can have fun. I said, we’ve got the beach. We don’t have to build some slide to have fun.”"

Mark Richt is right – the University of Miami is situated in a nice area and is not far from some of the most beautiful beaches and nightlife spots in the country (I live minutes from the campus, so I couldn’t agree more). At this rate, his players and recruits will be able to enjoy it more often – since the Hurricanes won’t be playing for championships and have to spend extra days on the practice field any time soon.

The current state of “The U” is a joke. Anyone who thought that the arrival of Mark Richt meant the days where the Hurricanes were a dominant force were going to come back at the snap of their fingers are delusional. Maybe, if they can win 10 games sometime this decade, the team will get a ticker tape parade through Miami-Dade County – past all the fans who are still living in 1987.
