FSU Baseball: Understanding Noles Recent Success During Crazy Season
By Jason Parker
FSU baseball has been one hard team to figure out during the 2017 season – now, they are just two wins away from the College World Series.
The date was April 30th and FSU baseball was a program that was reeling. The Seminoles had just dropped another ACC series, this time losing two out of three at home to No. 14 Virginia to drop their record to 27-18 on the year after going 9-11 during their previous 20 games starting with their second loss of the season to rival Florida.
What has happened over the last 19 games following that point has been nothing short of amazing. Florida State finished the regular season with a 6-2 record, including taking both games of a rain shortened series with then No. 2 ranked Louisville. The ACC tournament ended up being a clean four game sweep, including wins over the Cardinals and new No. 2 North Carolina, which was followed by a 4-1 record in this weekend’s regional to advance on.
Is this really the same FSU baseball team?

These can’t be the same group of players who dropped the opener against VCU and later a series against Virginia Tech at various points this season, right? I mean, this was a team who went 5-10 against teams ranked in the top 25 this season, but suddenly went 6-2 in their final eight games against ranked foes including the postseason.
Now, this is a Seminoles baseball team that is just two wins this coming weekend away from heading to their first College World Series appearance since the 2012 season. The one thing standing in their way? A Sam Houston State that won the Southland Conference tournament and shocked No. 5 national seed Texas Tech this past weekend.
Yes, the Bearkats are a Cinderella story – one that finished the regular season 36-20 including eight losses against Houston Baptist, Central Arkansas and Stephen F. Austin. Yes, folks – the Florida State Seminoles are two wins against this team away from turning what looked to be the beginning of the end into a trip to Omaha.
Now, don’t get me wrong – I’m not trying to be cocky and make reservations for Nebraska. After all, the last time FSU baseball hosted a regional, they were swept by an Indiana team they had no business losing to. The Bearkats are going to come to play this weekend and knock off a power program the way they did it to the Red Raiders this past weekend.
Just take a moment to let that sink in – a Florida State team that some worried wouldn’t even make it to the NCAA Tournament (and now holds the consecutive seasons record at 40) is two wins over the Southland Conference champion from being one of the last eight squads standing.
