Here’s a preview of FSU baseball and their next game during the 2017 baseball season as they head to DeLand for a showdown with the Haters.

After coming with maybe the biggest weekend series win of the season – taking two of three from the then No. 4 ranked Clemson Tigers, FSU baseball took their good mojo and got a midweek win over Stetson before the always exciting weekend series against the Miami Hurricanes – one of the best rivalries in college baseball no matter the records.

Unfortunately, the Seminoles were only able to get out of Coral Gables with a series split after winning Friday, giving away the game Saturday with an error and watching Sunday’s game get washed away. Now, they head back to face that same Stetson team for a one game showdown before heading back to Tallahassee for another three game series against a ranked foe.

Here’s our preview of this week’s game between the Seminoles and the Hatters.

The Last Time The ‘Noles Took The Field

Despite having the worst combined record between them in decades, the annual meeting between FSU baseball and Miami did actually turn out to be some decent baseball. Friday, the ‘Noles gave the Hurricanes the early lead but Dylan Busby stayed hot with a three run homer – part of a four RBI night – as the Seminoles got the 6-3 win.

Saturday, the hard work of a three RBI night from Qunicy Nieporte and a solid outing from starter Tyler Holton got thrown away (literally) as a Taylor Walls error in the 10th inning helped Miami steal a 5-4 win.

Sunday, after the game got pushed up to noon – only to go back to its normal 1 p.m. start time – the Seminoles jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third inning when bad weather in the area (further hampered by some gamesmanship from the always shady Hurricanes head coach Jim Morris) forced the game into a long rain delay after which it was officially cancelled – marking the first time since 1978 that the teams will not play three regular season games in a year.

Opponent Preview

The Hatters have been slumping this season, coming into this week’s game with the Seminoles with a record of 18-24. That includes going 5-7 in their last 12 games following that horrible move put on by the Florida Gators – cancelling the game with Stetson leading 10-1 by refusing to play the bottom of the fifth inning after a rain delay. FSU baseball beat the Hatters last week 7-3 in Tallahassee in what was supposed to be a two game set, but Tuesday’s game was cancelled. As a team, Stetson is batting .266 on the season while the pitching staff is giving up an ERA of 4.01 while opposing teams are batting just .251 against them.

Interesting Fact

The rivalry between the Seminoles and the Hatters is actually one of the oldest in FSU baseball history. The teams first met all the way back in 1949, playing yearly for over a decade before playing just one game between 1960 and 1970. After meeting more often for the next six years, they met just five times between 1977 and 2003 – with all meetings coming in the NCAA Tournament. The teams renewed their rivalry in 2005 and have met annually since 2010 with the ‘Noles holding onto a 60-22 series lead.
