FSU Baseball and Miami were both desperate for a series victory when they met. Neither team was able to take the series as it was shortened due to weather.

FSU baseball played well and earned a 6-3 victory in the opening game of their series at Miami. However, the Noles will be disappointed they came up short on Saturday in a 5-4 loss in a 10 inning game.

Sunday’s game was originally scheduled for 1:00 PM, then was moved to 12:00 PM… then moved back to 1:00 PM. The Noles were in a good spot with a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning when the game came to an abrupt halt due to lightning.

The game was never resumed and because it didn’t reach the 5th inning it wasn’t an official game.

Friday

FSU baseball played a solid game in the series opener at rival Miami and it resulted in a 6-3 victory. Cole Sands pitched well as the starter and the FSU bullpen put in a nice performance as well. The Noles racked up 10 hits and they did not commit any errors.

Cole Sands’s line for the night was 4.1 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 7 K. Alec Byrd faced two batters with a walk and a strike out. Jim Voyles had the best performance of his season going three innings, allowing just two hits and one earned run. Drew Carlton was finally able to grab his third save as he pitched the last 1.1 innings allowing no hits and just one base runner.

Dylan Busby stayed on his heater and led the Noles at the plate, the junior’s three-run homer in the fifth got the Noles going. Busby would add another RBI in the 9th. Busby was 3-5 with 4 RBI on the night. Freshman Drew Mendoza was 2-4 with a run scored.

Friday was Busby’s fifth straight game with at least three RBI, he’s the first person in FSU baseball history to accomplish that feat.

Saturday

FSU’s prospects of a series victory were looking good early on Saturday. Quincy Nieporte hit a homer in the top of the 2nd inning for a 1-0 lead. Nieporte came through again with a two-RBI single in the third. The Noles were up 3-0 with their best pitcher, Tyler Holton, on the mound. It was a nice spot to be in.

However in the bottom half of the frame, Miami’s Michael Burns launched a grand slam to give the Hurricanes the 4-3 lead on just his second home run of the season. The pitchers for both clubs would cruise for the next four innings. In the top of the 8th, FSU’s Jackson Lueck tied the game at 4-4 with a solo home run.

The game would go to 10 innings and FSU picked an unfortunate time to commit their first error of the series. In the bottom of the 10th Miami had a runner on 2nd with one out, Taylor Walls committed a throwing error on a routine ground ball and Miami scored for the walk-off 5-4 win.

Aside from the grand slam, Holton was solid. The sophomore had a line of 6.1 IP, 3 H, 4 ER, 3 BB, 5 K.

The Noles did not hit the ball well on Saturday, FSU accumulated just five hits as a team. Leading the team at the plate was Quincy Nieporte who was 2-5 with a homer and three RBI. Jackson Lueck was 1-4 with a home run.

Ramifications

Look, FSU baseball is gonna be disappointed they didn’t win this series. Miami is a bad team and the Noles should have taken care of this in the first two games. I do believe FSU would have won the game Sunday had it carried on but that doesn’t get the Noles anything. I don’t think the split is gonna kill FSU in RPI or with the committee, but a series win would have been much better. The Noles are now 25-16 (10-10) with some big series on the horizon.
