FSU Football: Chris Thompson Re-Signs With Washington Redskins
By Kelvin Hunt
Former FSU football running back Chris Thompson keeps finding work in the league. He re-signed with the Washington Redskins on Friday.
It pays to put the work in, and that hard work has paid off for former FSU football running back Chris Thompson.
The speedster re-signed with the Washington Redskins on Friday, but the terms were not disclosed. That’s great news for a player who suffered a broken back while at FSU, and an injury riddled rookie season in 2013 with the Redskins.
Thompson was drafted in the fifth round of the 2013 NFL Draft with the No. 154 overall pick. He played in four games before being put on injured reserve with a torn labrum.
Thompson was released the following year before signing on with the practice squad only to be promoted to the active roster that December.
He hasn’t looked back since then, developing an increasing role each year he’s been in the league. The 2016 season saw Thompson play in all 16 games and set career highs in rushing attempts, yards, receptions and receiving yards.
He also was featured in the kick return game, averaging 21.1 yards per return on 17 attempts.
Washington Redskins head coach Jay Gruden spoke on Thompson’s future:
“I have no problem bringing in Chris Thompson, a guy like that, off the bench and bringing him out there,” Gruden said in February at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. “He’s a great pass protector, a great route runner; he has great value in the National Football League.”
Thoughts
It’s great to see a player like Thompson be able to stick around to receive a second contract. Those are usually more player friendly, especially for players like Thompson who were selected later in the draft.

He’ll turn 27 years old later this year. Thompson could potentially get a third contract if he plays his cards right. He has suffered a lot of injuries, but football wise has a lot of tread left on the tires.
