FSU baseball picked up their fourth straight win by sweeping the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame in a three game series in South Bend.

After a dramatic come back against Jacksonville in the mid week, FSU baseball picked up more momentum with an important sweep of Notre Dame over the weekend. The three wins brought FSU’s overall record to 18-7 on the season and 6-3 in the ACC. Notre Dame dropped to 7-15 overall and 2-7 in the ACC.

Just as it did at Virginia Tech, the threat of inclement weather forced a scheduling change in the weekend series against Notre Dame. On Friday the two teams played a double header, the Noles won the first game 8-2 and the second game 8-3 in eleven innings. In Saturday’s season finale, Drew Parrish led FSU baseball to a 5-1 victory and the sweep.

Friday Game One

Friday starter Cole Sands made his second straight solid start on Friday. Sands earned the victory to improve to 4-1 on the season and posted a line of 6 IP, 5 H, ER, 2 BB, 7 K. Alec Byrd and Chase Haney combined for the relief effort in the victory.

Dylan Busby led the Noles at the plate by going 3-5 in the game with a home run and four RBI. Jackson Lueck continued to make his presence felt in his return from a shin splints issue. Lueck hit his first home run of the season when he launched an opposite field home run in the first game against Notre Dame. Nick Derr was 2-4 on the day and recorded his first triple as a Seminole.

FSU was able to finish the game without committing an error. The Noles outhit Notre Dame 11-8 on their way to the 8-2 victory.

Friday Game Two

The final score to the second game of Friday’s double header was 8-3 but the contest was much tighter than the score indicated. The two teams finished the 9th inning with the score knotted at 2-2, it took the Noles four more innings to seal the deal as they finally claimed victory in the 13th.

Tyler Holton made another quality start as he was able to pitch 6.1 innings, allowing five hits and two earned runs while recording seven strikeouts to just one walk. The FSU bullpen was phenomenal. Drew Carlton gave the Noles 3.2 innings, gave up just two hits, no earned runs, and struck out seven batters in the process. Jim Voyles, who was credited with the win, posted a line of 3 IP, 2 H, ER, 1 BB, 2 K.

FSU fell behind 2-0 when Notre Dame was able to scratch across runs in the fifth and sixth innings. FSU responded with two runs of their own in the seventh, the Noles only recorded one hit in the inning but earned four walks and a hit by pitch.

FSU was able to take a 3-2 lead in the top of the 12th inning on a wild pitch but the game wasn’t quite read to end as Notre Dame scored a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Jackson Lueck was able score Dylan Busby on a misplayed fly ball to left field in the top of the 13th to make it 4-3, later that inning freshman Tyler Daughtry hit a three run shot for his first career home run, FSU was able to add a run and complete the 8-3 victory.

It was the second straight errorless game for FSU baseball. Top hitters for the Noles were JC Flowers who went 4-5 with a run scored, Dylan Busby: 3-7 with two runs scored, and Tyler Daughtry 1-3 with a home run, three RBI, and a run scored.

Saturday

There is no doubting who the star of the series finale was for FSU baseball. Freshman lefty Drew Parrish was absolutely magnificent on the day. Parrish threw a complete game, allowed just three hits, gave up no earned runs, and recorded seven strikeouts to just one walk. The win brought Parrish’s record to 3-1 on the season.

Parrish was pitching with the lead from the very start as Jackson Lueck continued his impressive weekend with a two run home run in the top of the first. From there Parrish cruised and FSU cruised with him to a 5-1 win. FSU wasn’t able to go the entire series without an error but only committed one on Saturday. The Noles outhit Notre Dame seven to three on the day.

Offensive leaders for FSU were Jackson Lueck who went 2-5 with a home run, two runs and two RBI. Quincy Nieporte was 1-3 with two RBI and Rhett Aplin went 2-4 with a solo home run.

It was an important sweep for the Noles, as we discussed in the preview they must win the games they are expected to win such as the ones against Notre Dame. FSU has a big wek in front of them with a matchup with Florida in Jacksonville on Tuesday and a home series with number 10 Carolina this weekend. Check in Tuesday for our preview of the Florida game.
