Mascot
I’ll begin on a complimentary note. The University of Florida symbolized by an alligator is spot on. First, it’s accurate. Unlike the roving streaks of tigers continually terrorizing the greater-Clemson area, there are actually Gators in Florida (how novel). Second, it’s unique, meaning unlike animals present in most every state, not a lot of universities have the opportunity to make gators their mascots. Third, as far as animals go, gators are pretty damn cool. They’re apex predators that feature an incredible blend of speed and power, a great mix for an athletic mascot.
Alligators also lay claim to an unmatched staying power. I mean, they’re freaking dinosaurs. They’ve survived drastic climatic and environmental shifts over eons. We’ll see if they can survive Will Muschamp.
The plushy interpretation offered in the above-pictured Albert and Alberta is far from intimidating, of course, but they’re really more for the kids, like FSU’s Cimarron. The problem? They’re not an alternate mascot– they’re the mascots. And I’m far from shaking.
