FSU football coaches have been busier in the transfer portal over the last few weeks as more departures from the roster happened. They took a defensive back and developmental QB from the portal last week and continue to look at wide receiver and offensive line options.
One new area that's emerged is the tight-end position. Some fans seemed confused by reports of FSU coaches entertaining bringing in a tight end from the transfer portal. However, FSU only has three scholarship players at the position on the roster. One has never played a college snap, another only has one year of experience, and UCF transfer Randy Pittman is the elder statesman with two years.
FSU needs more depth and experience in the position of a team that likes to run the ball.
Markeston Douglas decided to re-enter the portal after re-joining the FSU program for the spring semester. Former FSU offensive coordinator and current Arizona State head coach Kenny Dillingham indicated on social media that Douglas wanted to return closer to home when he left Arizona State after last season.
It seemed like Dillingham gave Douglas his blessing to return to FSU, where he started his college career, where Dillingham was the coach and Mike Norvell gave the "OK." However, with a new offensive coordinator at FSU, it appears Douglas didn't fit in the cards after going through spring camp.
The tight end positions in Gus Malzahn's (and Mike Norvell's offense) block a lot in the running game, and it's not uncommon for guys to get beat up. It's why FSU added a transfer tight end from the portal in the Winter Portal window with experience, so all they are doing is replacing the void created by Douglas leaving.
That's why they are looking around the transfer portal at the tight-end position. It looks like receiver, running back, offensive line, safety, and defensive line are other areas they are looking for.
