Florida State football is at a cross road with currently possessing a 4-5 record on the year, where they have lost five of their last six games. This is not where the fan base envisioned that it would go after beating Alabama in the opener.
August 30th seems like forever ago, where it feels like a fever dream. The program is now 6-15 in its last 21 games. The standard was not where it needs to be, where even head football coach Mike Norvell admitted that to the media on Monday afternoon.
The Seminoles want to keep business as usual and have a sense of normalcy. However, it is difficult to act like nothing is transpiring with all the firings across the college football landscape and Norvell's $54 million buyout looming in the distance. This should be a reminder that this isn't a discussion of Florida State should keep or get rid of Mike Norvell.
WHY HASN'T FLORIDA STATE MADE THE MOVE?
The losses continue to pile up for the Florida State program, who is used to competing for conference and national championships. However, Coach Norvell is still employed with the university.
The administration mentioned that they remain committed to helping Norvell and this team be successful for the remainder of the 2025 season and will complete a comprehensive assessment in the offseason.
There has to be a method to their madness because the program can't keep taking the losses under the chin and not a plan for the future with other teams such as Florida, LSU, Penn State, and Auburn having a head start in looking for the next option.
Unless Florida State is considering unemployed options such as James Franklin and/or Jimbo Fisher, there isn't a need to fire Mike Norvell right now. The Seminoles could be looking at coaches who are in serious contention for the playoffs.
Waiting until the end of the year can also save them a couple million of dollars. Then, on top of that, the Seminoles need to make sure that letting Norvell walk would be beneficial for the program. Paying almost $100 million for a new head man could be very risky if the right hire isn't made, especially if the only attainable options are Group of Five's Jon Sumrall or Alex Golesh.
As a wise man said: "Patience is a virtue". That is what is transpiring in Tallahassee.
