Gus Malzahn-Offensive Coordinator
The Gus Malzahn experiment had some success, but was limited by the quarterback chosen to run the offense. That falls on Malzhan, and if his assessments of quarterbacks continue to consist of players like Thomas Castellanos? It’ll always be limited.
To his credit, Malzhan did a good job improving the running game and creating explosive opportunities in the passing game. FSU usually had multiple guys running free, but Thomas Castellanos either failed to see them, was late with the throw, the throw was inaccurate, or the receivers dropped the ball.
However, the offense was often predictable, and some of the playcalls in crucial situations left much to be desired. One of the reasons Malzhan has to go is that he doesn’t go on the road recruiting. That is nuts.
That dynamic probably didn’t sit well with the other coaches, and why would you pay a full-time coach the amount of money he made without requiring him to recruit?
Mike Norvell can call the plays like in the past. I’m fine with that, but I’d use this as an opportunity to hire a young and hungry recruiter, similar to the dynamic of Jimbo Fisher and James Coley in his early years as head coach at FSU.
