Florida State football coaches knew Izayia Williams would still be going through the rehabbing phase when they were looking to sign him at the end of last year. Williams was an early enrollee and has been working out and continuing to rehab the knee injury, so it was no surprise when he communicated he wouldn’t be participarting in spring camp.
Williams indicated that he wouldn’t participate until fall camp rolls around, but he’s running full speed and moving laterally in his rehab process. The news may come as a surprise to casual fans, but this was likely always the plan.
There’s no sense in rushing him back this spring. He can take mental reps and stay in the film room as his body continues the journey back to 100 percent health.
The linebacker position has some experience returning, and the addition of Chris Jones from Southern Miss was a major move for the Noles. Williams is someone who could make an impact early in this FSU career when fully healthy.
Williams could be a player on special teams once he gets healthy and potentially working into the linebacker unit later in the season
Williams went on to speak about his relationship with new FSU linebacker coach Ernie Sims. Sims had been recruiting Williams since his sophomore year in high school.
Williams has goals to learn everything and move up the depth chart as a freshman. FSU fans are excited to see what this linebacker unit can do under the direction of former FSU linebacker Ernie Sims.
Outside of the 2023 season, the FSU linebacker unit has largely been a disappointment. However, bringing in talented players like Williams can change that trajectory in a hurry.
