Florida State football has a decision to make this offseason when it comes to the quarterback position. This is the third straight year that the Seminoles need to get a signal-caller in the transfer portal (DJ Uiagalelei and Thomas Castellanos in previous offseasons).
There is a crowd out there that wants the program to see if it can develop the talent that it has in the position room with former four-star prospect Kevin Sperry.
The Texas native showcased flashes of being successful last season as Castellanos's back-up. However, the question remains if it leads the Seminoles to be a championship contender. That is a ton of pressure from a redshirt freshman.
Fans know that Jameis Winston and Deondre Francois did remarkable things here at Florida State as redshirt freshmen, but these two were one-of-a-kind.
Backup Brock Glenn entered the transfer portal recently for Florida State. This wasn't a huge loss as the youngster in Kevin Sperry took over the second string spot, and Glenn looked to be sliding down the depth chart.
However, Glenn brought a great culture fit, and genuinely gave all that he had for the university. Plus, he was a 2023 ACC Champion. Never forget that!
The quarterback room took a hit as transfer Thomas Castellanos declared for the 2026 NFL Draft, which ultimately meant that he lost out on getting his waiver for next season. This isn't to say that this is a good or bad thing that Castellanos is moving on, but the position group is thin.
I used to believe that the Seminoles could survive with having Kevin Sperry, Brock Glenn, and signee Jaden O'Neal in the room. However, with Glenn in the portal, Florida State looks to searching for answers in the transfer portal again.
Even if Coach Norvell believes in Kevin Sperry (which wouldn't be a bad proposition), the Seminoles have to make sure that they get the quarterback position right. If I was in Florida State's shoes, I would attempt to lure in Old Dominion's Colton Joseph.
According to ESPN Stats and Information, Joseph recorded 2,624 passing yards with 21 touchdowns and ten interceptions during the 2025 season as a passer. He also accumulated 1,007 yards and 13 touchdowns on the ground.
Unlike Castellanos, he has a taller stature at 6'2" and shows his dynamic ability to throw over the middle of the field. Even though the former UCF and Boston College transfer played under Malzahn, this seems like a better fit in his system than Castellanos.
Long story short, if the coaching staff feels confident in Joseph, spend the resources and go get an electric dual-threat option.
Even though I am not the biggest fan of Florida State continuing to go back to the transfer portal for a quarterback, especially if it means not playing Sperry, this is a monumental season for head football coach Mike Norvell and this coaching staff where they have to win now. It is time to bring dynamic players to Tallahassee.
