Steve Spurrier blasts Florida State with wild shot at Seminoles and Mike Norvell

Steve Spurrier always loves to kick rival teams of his while they are down, especially Florida State...

Death, taxes, and Steve Spurrier speaking his mind. The Head Ball Coach has been mighty chirpy in the wake of his beloved alma mater firing one former Group of Five head coach out of Louisiana and then replacing him with another. So yes, he is feeling himself a bit over Florida hiring Jon Sumrall away from Tulane. Of course, Florida State has opted to keep Mike Norvell around for yet another season...

Spurrier kicked Florida State while the Seminoles were down with this dig over the airwaves Monday.

"FSU, they've got some issues up there. They've got a coach they can't rid of, 'cause they don't have the money to let him go. So that's where they're at. Fortunately, we had enough money to pay our guy off, I guess."

The amount of hate he has in his heart for Florida State, Georgia and Tennessee combined is unreal.

Look. Spurrier's comments about the state of things in Florida has more to do with the Gators having more available money to spend than do the Seminoles. It is a consequence of Florida State playing in an ACC that is losing more and more market share by the day. Although hiring Sumrall could turn the Gators around quickly, the longer Florida State holds onto Norvell will only delay the inevitable here.

There are other programs in the same predicament as Florida State, but why does it feel so hopeless?

There is roughly one equivalent of each team in each Power Four conference. Florida State is the ACC version of Wisconsin, who is the Big Ten version of Baylor, who is the Big 12 version of South Carolina in the SEC. None of them made it to a bowl game this year, falling way short of expectations. At this time, all four are bringing their frustrating head coaches back, hoping NIL could make any difference.

While Baylor and South Carolina are more similar, the university administration at hand has devolved Florida State into the closest approximation of Wisconsin we have at this time. Do you want to be in the same company with those teams? No, you do not. What is the most troubling about Spurrier's comments are Florida State is not even in a position to defend itself. This is because it did it to itself.

To attempt to tie a bow on this, Spurrier is going to say whatever he feels like because he is the greatest head coach at two SEC schools in Florida and South Carolina. Heck, even his Duke Blue Devils are playing for a conference championship in a league that Florida State has historically dominated. For Florida State to do nothing is a choice in and of itself. No wonder fans are over this.

If Florida State did not want Spurrier to speak, it should have found a way to move on from Norvell...
