CASTELLANOS IS A HEADLINER
Florida State football has acquired many players to its roster from the transfer portal and recruiting ranks. There is also a new coaching staff that will attempt to guide the team in the right direction.
One of the biggest stories of the offseason was the acquisition of former UCF and Boston College quarterback transfer Thomas Castellanos. The dual-threat option gave Coach Norvell stressful moments during the 2023 and 2024 matchups.
BENCHING AT BOSTON COLLEGE
I know that some fans are pessimistic about bringing in Castellanos since he was benched with the Eagles in 2024 under first-year head football coach Bill O'Brien, where the signal-caller completed 99 of his 161 pass attempts with 1,366 yards and 18 touchdowns with only five interceptions.
He did not have as much rushing success last year as he did in 2023 (1,113 yards and 13 touchdowns), where he only had 194 yards and one touchdown. It looks like he did not fit the pro-style scheme that O'Brien asked of him.
IS THE FORMER BOSTON COLLEGE QB A TOP-30 SIGNAL CALLER?
While I am not suggesting that Castellanos is a top-ten quarterback, the arch-rival Florida Gators are hyping up former five-star prospect DJ Lagway as a top-three option, where he recorded 12 touchdowns and nine interceptions in 2024 in a very difficult schedule.
I think the best aspect of the offseason was pairing the quarterback with new offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn, who emphasizes the importance of running the football. This should allow the offense to take vertical shots with transfer wide receivers Duce Robinson and Squirrel White.
MY PERSONAL OUTLOOK
In taking the long-yardage passes, Castellanos should have rushing success in the offense in 2025. I am excited to see if the quarterback can stay healthy through twelve games in the regular season (I don't want to jinx anything).
I am not endorsing him to be a Heisman Trophy candidate or anything, but I believe that Castellanos is a good pairing for what Florida State wants to do on offense this season. I am not asking for a ton, I just want the Seminoles to have success on offense and change the narrative of the disaster that was last season.
