QB DJ Uiagalelei isn't afraid to push the football downfield in his first spring practice
FSU football had a tremendous 2023 campaign that was filled with excitement after finishing with an undefeated regular season and an ACC Championship. The program is trending in a positive direction under the guidance of fifth-year head football coach Mike Norvell.
While he has continuously praised that squad for what they accomplished, he has to turn his attention to the 2024 season as they prepare to defend their ACC crown from the Clemson Tigers (thanks for finally suing the conference... it's about time!) and others.
The Seminoles are bringing in 38 scholarship newcomers. With that development, it brings in a ton of unknowns to the program. One newcomer that fans will be monitoring is former Clemson and Oregon transfer quarterback DJ Uiagalelei.
There is a mixed bag of feelings for the veteran as he has had his ups and downs as a collegiate signal-caller. However, he has showcased an ability to have a strong arm as well as a command of any offense that he has been in.
Speaking of a strong arm, former Alabama wide receiver transfer Malik Benson spoke to the media after Florida State's spring practice talking about Uiagalelei's ability to push the football downfield where he called his deep ball "beautiful".
One concern from Seminole fans last season was that quarterback Jordan Travis sometimes fell in love with taking the top off of an opposing defense instead of taking what the defense gives them. With ultra-talented running back Trey Benson as well wide receivers Johnny Wilson and Keon Coleman not with the team in 2024, it will likely mean that the offense will be balanced.
As it relates to Uiagalelei's deep ball, I believe that it will be an effective method to get the football to the Seminoles' speedy players on its roster. There should be a good mix of deeper passes as well as shorter concepts to keep the defense honest.
It is very encouraging to hear that Uiagalelei isn't afraid to let it loose. Lets see how he performs as Florida State has their second football spring practice today.
