Head coach Mike Norvell says young defensive back is improving in fall camp
Florida State football had loads of talent within its 2024 recruiting class. The Seminoles had a productive haul at the defensive back position.
Defensive backs coach Patrick Surtain Sr. had secured four defensive backs in the class with Charles Lester III, Jamari Howard, Cai Bates, and Ricky Knight III. I know a ton of attention goes to the fact that Florida State was not able to land KJ Bolden where he signed with the Georgia Bulldogs.
However, that should not allow Seminole fans to think that the position is not talented. Surtain Sr. plans to replicate the production from last year even after losing pieces such as Renardo Green, Jarrian Jones, and Akeem Dent.
Florida State head football coach Mike Norvell met with the media after Tuesday's practice and was asked about anyone who stood out. Norvell mentioned true freshman cornerback Charles Lester III has been one of the most improved players on the Seminoles' roster from spring to fall.
Lester III was an early enrollee and was a former five-star prospect (obviously he dropped to a four-star recruit since he was committed to Florida State). The talent was always there.
As we saw with a player such as wide receiver Hykeem Williams, who was previously a five-star prospect, it sometimes takes players a minute to get acclimated to the collegiate game.
Honestly, Florida State has a really good core at the cornerback position with pieces such as Azareye'h Thomas, Fentrell Cypress II, Earl Little Jr., and Quindarrius Jones (just to name a few). All of those players will be huge contributors for the team this year.
It is worth mentioning that the Seminoles' defensive scheme rotates various defensive backs. However, it can be a lot to ask for a true freshman to contribute right away. We did see safety Conrad Hussey contribute last year as a true freshman.
We have learned that if the player can help the team win, they will play you.
