FSU softball: Three major takeaways from series sweep over NC State
By Kelvin Hunt
Freshmen Shined
I've mentioned most of their stats already, but the freshmen contributions can't go unnoticed this weekend. Jaysoni Beachum and Isa Torres have been doing it all season, so it comes as no surprise when they have big games. However, Mimi Gooden's performance can't go unnoticed when it was only her fourth start this season. It helped hide that Allison Royalty didn't pitch a single inning all weekend, and the pitching staff was fine.
Kennedy Harp has played in 26 games with five starts and has quietly put together an excellent freshman season in limited action. She's batting .385, with a .455 on-base percentage, three home runs, and 11 RBI. She's also 4-4 in stolen bases and has not committed an error on defense. If we combine Beachum, Torres, Harp, Gooden, and Danley, that's five freshmen with major contributions to the series sweep. Again, NC State isn't a good team, but it's a conference foe, and that experience should bode well for each player's continued development.
Hopefully, the coaching staff will have opportunities to get these younger players into the fold in the mid-week games against McNeese State, and on the road against Louisville next week.
