FSU football: Will Tight Ends be a strength in 2024?
By Kelvin Hunt
FSU football has had issues at the tight end position for years but used the transfer portal to snag two talented guys, who strengthened the position for the 2023 season. Jaheim Bell and Kyle Morlock provided a nice 1-2 punch, accounting for 58 receptions, 758 yards, and two touchdowns. Bell declared for the NFL Draft, but Morlock returns as the most experienced/productive player in the room. He stands to show a great deal of improvement with a year under his belt after transferring from the DII level. However, there is almost no production on the depth chart once you scroll past his name. Jackson West and Brian Courtney are two guys who have been at FSU for multiple years. Jerrale Powers is another guy who's been at FSU for a couple of years but has missed all spring with an injury.
Freshman Landen Thomas enrolled at FSU this spring and is on the "fast track" to play as a freshman, according to Mike Norvell. Norvell has also gone out of his way to praise the development of Brian Courtney and Jackson West. Courtney is more of a receiving threat, with outstanding speed for someone in the position. West has always been a willing blocker and played with physicality, but the receiving part has been an issue. The Battle's End Collective recently announced a partnership with West, which likely means he's expected to become a contributor in 2024. He played a decent bit at the end of last season as Jaheim Bell was hurt. Can the trio of West, Courtney, and Thomas combine with Morlock to make the tight end room a strength in 2024? The tell-tale sign regarding the position will be if FSU pursues another tight end from the transfer portal. If they don't, the FSU coaching staff must be confident in what they have at the position.
