Context On Summer Entries

The winter transfer portal window (pre-spring) is the most important because that's when the greatest amount of talent enters the portal. It's when teams usually want to add all of their transfer players. One of the most important reasons is it allows the player to enroll and participate in spring camp, which helps the player get acclimated to the program while learning the scheme. It provides the coaching staff with opportunities to learn the strengths and weaknesses of those new players, and then devise summer workout plans to improve and strengthen those areas.

The coaches and players are afforded that opportunity with players who don't join their programs until summer camp because the coaches don't spend as much time with the players in the summer. That's when the strength and conditioning staff spends the most time with them. That's another thing, the strength and conditioning staff won't have the data from the spring to help construct the most efficient strength and conditioning program for those new guys. Overall, most players who join programs after spring camp are at a disadvantage compared to those joining in the spring.
