FSU football: 3 question marks in the aftermath of the Seminoles' loss versus GT
IS DJ UIAGALELEI THE ANSWER AT QUARTERBACK?
Florida State fans were frustrated after the loss to Georgia Tech on Saturday. Rightfully so, I am frustrated and disappointed myself as I anticipated the Seminoles to win the contest.
After a defeat, fans point to certain aspects of the game that dictated the result. Individuals know that the quarterback position is one of the most important units. Florida State did add transfer signal-caller DJ Uiagalelei this offseason.
He was tasked with being a veteran presence in a quarterback room with youngsters Brock Glenn, Luke Kromenhoek, and Trever Jackson. Florida State named Uiagalelei as the starting quarterback this offseason as he was the most consistent option.
However, he has had an up-and-down collegiate career. Most fans remember his time at Clemson where he benched in favor of Cade Klubnik. DJ Uiagalelei had a forgettable performance versus the Yellow Jackets on Saturday as he completed 19 of his 27 passes for 193 yards with zero touchdowns and zero interceptions.
It seemed to be concerning as Uiagalelei's longest pass was a 21-yard throw to running back Lawrance Toafili. He did not unleash the football downfield, which is a strength of his. I do not blame that entirely on him as the Georgia Tech defenders blitzed quite a bit.
I think it could be that Norvell was not comfortable with utilizing Uiagalelei heavily in the offense. As I look at it, every conference game is crucial from now on if Florida State wants to win the conference and get an automatic bid in the College Football Playoff. It starts with Uiagalelei throwing the football downfield to his playmakers.
