Position If Impact Guy Becomes Available

The positions listed in this piece are what I could consider necessities, but FSU could add more help from the portal if players become available. However, these would need to be guys who could make an impact this year and have eligibility past 2024. The one position that fits the bill is a defensive tackle. Joshua Farmer(when he gets healthy), Darrell Jackson, Grady Little, Daniel Lyons, and KJ Sampson give FSU two excellent starters and some solid reserves in the latter three listed.

However, FSU will lose Farmer and Jackson after this year, which means there will likely be a steep dropoff in 2025 unless they can add some help from the portal. I like the potential of Lyons and Sampson, but that only leaves the two incoming 2024 freshmen defensive tackles on the roster, and they'll need at least a year at FSU before they can contribute at all. So, a portal addition after spring is more of a move to impact the rotation and depth in 2025 than this year. However, if a guy with the potential of Braden Fiske became available? The staff takes him if they can get him.

The only other position that would fit this bill is likely the safety position. However, FSU recruited the secondary at a high level of late and there's several young guys working to get on the field. If the coaching staff were to add someone, it might influence a younger guy to hit the portal. We saw how important good safety play impacted the FSU defense last year when Akeem Dent was healthy. The FSU defense saw a significant dropoff when he missed several games with his hamstring injury.
