Many folks, including myself, expected the FSU defense to be much better than it showed against Georgia Tech in the season opener. That side of the ball has a lot of talent, and I expect it to improve with each game. Adam Fuller has a lot of new faces playing major roles, and it's the first time they faced an opponent where they didn't know what they were going to do. I wrote about the five things they needed to do against Georgia Tech to limit their success here. However, I'll list them for quick referral:

  • Contain QB
  • Great Eye Discipline
  • Avoid Missing Tackles
  • Limit First Down Success
  • Get Off The Field On Third Down

FSU did none of these things. Haynes King had 15 carries for 54 yards, and the defense had poor eye discipline that cost them several times. FSU missed a ton of tackles(not surprising in the first game). The biggest issue was Georgia Tech's ability to win over early downs, which helped their third-down conversion percentage. The Yellow Jackets only had nine third downs and converted five times.

FSU will face some similar things against Boston College, though they have some variables that put them at a disadvantage. It's a road game with a new coaching staff, and it's their first game. Here are three things the FSU defense can't afford to do against Boston College.
