FSU football: 3 HUGE overreactions from upset loss against Georgia Tech
By Kelvin Hunt
DJ Uiagalelei Was Bad
DJ Uiagalelei wasn't why FSU lost the game. He was 19 of 27 for 193 passing yards. He had seven rushing yards and was only sacked once. He didn't play poorly, didn't turn the ball over, and seemed handicapped by the playcalling. FSU never seemed to adjust to the adjustments Georgia Tech made after the first scoring drive to open the game. Georgia Tech started the play downhill more to limit FSU's run game. They blitz more, and FSU never tried to make them pay until it was too late in the game.
DJ Uiagalelei made some big throws late on FSU's final scoring drive. Why didn't we see more of that earlier in the game? It was his first real game in the offense, and it could be that Mike Norvell doesn't trust him or the receivers to take those risks. However, at some point, they needed to change things up because they were not able to run the ball effectively after the first drive. Mike Norvell alluded to some failures on his part in the post-game press conference. This offense has lots of potential, but the coaching staff must put the players in a position to make explosive plays. The short passes to the running backs will not be that effective since the defenders are already coming downhill or close to the line of scrimmage to defend the run.
