FSU baseball: Multiple draftees sign MLB contracts this week
By Kelvin Hunt
FSU baseball had its best season in years and was only a couple of wins away from competing for that elusive national title a year after not making the postseason. FSU went from 23 to 49 wins from year one to year two under Link Jarrett. He deserves a ton of credit, but there was a ton of talent on the 2024 team. It's why FSU had the most players (8) selected in the 2024 MLB Draft in the ACC, ranked fifth nationally, and tied for third-most among all college teams. It was the most drafted since FSU had nine in 2017. James Tibbs III (first round), Cameron Smith (first round), Marco Dinges (fourth round), Jaime Ferrer (fourth round), Carson Dorsey (seventh round), Gavin Adams (eighth round), Yoel Tejeda Jr. (14th round), Conner Whittaker (15th round). Over half of these guys have signed their MLB contracts:
Thoughts
We knew James Tibbs and Cam Smith would likely go in the first round and instantly become millionaires, though Tibbs left a little money on the table regarding his slot value. I can't fault Gavin Adams for signing after missing all year after Tommy John surgery, and it looks like Jaime Ferrer signed for slightly under his slot value. However, I don't think he could have improved his stock more with another season. However, two players who likely could have improved their stock are Marco Dinges and Carson Dorsey. Dinges had a medical issue that prevented him from playing in the 2023 season, and that could have been a factor in signing. However, I think he could have gone even higher with another season at FSU. I can't fault him for signing for half a million dollars. Carson Dorsey probably could have been a second or third-round selection in next year's draft if he had a 2025 season as he pitched in the post-season. He still needs a lot of development, but his development can indeed be expedited in the minors. Yoel Tejeda Jr. was in the transfer portal so he wouldn't be at FSU in 2025 anyway, and Conner Whittaker will likely return to FSU. Whittaker expects be a big part of the pitching staff again in 2025.
