There's a reason former FSU baseball third baseman Cam Smith was the No. 14 overall selection in the 2024 MLB Draft. Smith got to work after signing for over five million dollars with the Chicago Cubs a few months ago. Smith behind his professional career in A ball in my home state of North Carolina with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans of the Carolina League. Smith batted .313 with six home runs, 12 RBI, and a .404 on-base percentage in 15 games. His six homers came in consecutive games before getting promoted to A+ ball with the Southbend Cubs of the Midwest League. Smith has batted .333 with one home run, nine RBI, and a .421 on-base percentage in 12 games. Smith only had 21 strikeouts in 114 official at-bats with 14 walks. That means he's only striking out in 18 percent of his at-bats. Smith will play for the Tennessee Smokies in the Southern League based just outside Knoxville, Tennessee.

Smith has played third base and some designated hitter since making his professional debut. He's made three errors in 49 chances (.939 field percentage). While solid defensively, it's his bat that's going to carry him to the show if he stays on this trajectory. It should come as no surprise to FSU baseball fans who watched him over the past two seasons. He batted .387 with 16 home runs and 57 RBI this past season. He had an on-base percentage of .488 and only struck out 48 times in 322 at-bats (14.9 percent). He's at his best when hitting the ball up the middle and to right-centerfield. I'm tracking all of the FSU draftees from last year's team. Be sure to follow me on X/Twitter for updates.
