FSU baseball: 3 keys to defeating UConn Huskies in Super Regionals
By Kelvin Hunt
FSU Offense
The FSU offense scored 24 runs in three games, but half came in the final game in the regional. They tended to struggle for long stretches against pitchers that frankly were nothing special. It felt like FSU batters were jacked off the home crowd energy and tried to hit a seven-run home run with nobody on the bases with every swing. UConn has three solid starting pitchers, and they can eat up innings. FSU has been aggressive at the plate all season, but it's time to take a more measured approach and make these opposing pitchers work. All three are usually around the strike zone with excellent strikeout-to-walk ratios. They are susceptible to the home run. .
They have a couple of guys in the bullpen who can eat up innings and don't allow much offense. I'd like to see the guys look first-pitch fastball and let anything offspeed go. If it's offspeed for a strike, tip your cap and make it a good at-bat. If it's a first-pitch fastball in a zone they can drive, let it rip. FSU swung at way too many pitches outside of the strike zone against UCF. If they get into hitter counts, lock in on fastballs and let the offspeed stuff go, even if it's a strike. FSU's offense is better than Oklahoma's but they held the Sooners to only one run in two of their three games with their starters going deep in the games. FSU must also capitalize on RISP and execute good situational hitting when opportunities present themselves.
