FSU baseball: 3 keys to defeating UConn Huskies in Super Regionals
By Kelvin Hunt
Defense
FSU baseball played solid defense all season but committed some uncharacteristic errors in regional play. They had five errors in three games, three by shortstop Alex Lodise. They worked around the errors for the most part, but UConn is a team that can't afford to give extra outs. They don't hit for crazy power, but it's enough to respect. However, one of the biggest things to be on the lookout for is their activity on the bases. They have three guys FSU must keep off the bases. Korey Morton (19 of 24 stolen bases), Paul Tammaro (16 of 27 stolen bases), and Caleb Shpur (26 of 28 stolen bases).
All three guys have an on-base percentage of .380 and higher. They are not afraid to put pressure on opposing defenses. FSU can counter that somewhat with Carson Dorsey and Jamie Arnold as left-handed starting pitchers. Dorsey has an outstanding move and Arnold usually doesn't allow much traffic. UConn has only grounded into 23 double-plays all year. FSU grounded into 39 for comparison's sake. The FSU defense making routine plays will be crucial to keeping the Huskies off the scoreboard.
