Former FSU football players Jared Verse and Trey Benson throwing out first pitches
During Florida State head football coach Mike Norvell's tenure with the Seminoles, he has always allowed former to come back to the university. This is the culture that he has instilled within the program.
Florida State football had a special 2023 season where it saw them accomplish an undefeated regular season and an ACC Championship. There were several contributors on that squad that decided to declare for the 2024 NFL Draft.
Two of those players (defensive end Jared Verse and running back Trey Benson) made their way to Tallahassee recently with the Seminoles' Pro Day coming later this week. They elected to throw out the first pitch at Florida State's baseball game on separate days.
First up was Verse, who is very confident in his abilities. He was destined to throw the pitch right down the middle. However, what transpired was that the talented defensive end probably needed to stick to the sport of football considering that he was projected to be a first-round draft pick.
The talented defender's face says it all... It was pretty rough, to say the least. However, that does not take away the fact that he knows how to get to the quarterback where he recorded 18 sacks in his two seasons in Tallahassee.
With Verse having a failed attempt at throwing out the first pitch, running back Trey Benson wanted to test his hand at being better than him. While it was better than Verse, it still looked like your typical Friday night at the bowling alley where it rolled to the plate after taking a skip.
The former Oregon transfer was very productive in Tallahassee where he recorded 1,800 yards and 23 touchdowns in his two seasons. Some individuals doubted his abilities, but he overcame the adversity and proved them wrong. While Benson likely won't be a first-round pick like Verse, he will still get drafted and make himself life-changing money.
With that being said, I believe that both Verse and Benson chose the right sport of football and I am glad that they did not go down the path to play baseball.
