Five MAJOR positives from FSU Seminoles victory over California Bears
By Kelvin Hunt
Actual Rushing Attack
Another struggle this season has been the inability to establish a rushing attack. FSU has been without starting tackle Jeremiah Byers since the Georgia Tech game, and Darius Washington missed the Memphis game. Those two voids were huge reasons why FSU struggled badly against Memphis. FSU offensive line coach Alex Atkins were also absent for the first three games serving a recruiting vioation suspension. Atkins and Washington returned for the California game.
FSU had solid success running the ball with Lawrance Toafili in the first half. FSU hadn't had 100 yards rushing in a game all season, much less in the first half. They had 24 rushing attempts for 104 yards, averaging 4.3 yards per rush. They seemed to get away from the rushing attack after DJ Uiagalelei threw an interception in the red zone and only finished the game with 132 rushing yards.
The success rushing seemed to open things up for Uiagalelei in the passing game. He was 12 of 19 for 104 passing yards in the first half. The offensive line got a solid push and didn't have running backs dodging defenders 2-3 yards behind the line of scrimmage for most of the night. We didn't see much counter, which is a running play that's been a sure-fire negative play most of the time. Self-scouting for the win!?
It's something to build on for sure.
