Current FSU LB Justin Cryer working out with NFL veteran LB
Florida State is looking for talented options in their linebacker position to emerge as they pair someone alongside veteran DJ Lundy.
The Seminoles are having to replace veterans such as Kalen DeLoach and Tatum Bethune, who were pivotal for Florida State as they accomplished an undefeated regular season and a conference championship in 2023.
However, linebacker Randy Shannon seems to have a plan in place as they have pieces such as Omar Graham Jr., Blake Nichelson, Justin Cryer, and DeMarco Ward. Plus, they added transfer portal prospects such as Shawn Murphy (Alabama) and Cam Riley (Auburn).
Speaking of Cryer, he was seen working out with legendary former Chiefs linebacker Derrick Johnson this offseason.
The former Northwestern transfer was acquired last offseason before even playing a down for them. He was a three-star prospect in the 2023 cycle that the Florida State coaching staff really liked.
The Orange Bowl loss versus the Georgia Bulldogs was something that Seminole fans want to forget (for good reason). However, the young linebacker had success when he was able to come down hill and effectively stop the running game. He had six total tackles in the contest.
That could be a great building block for Cryer as he looks to solidify a starting role with the Seminoles during the 2024 season. With the new faces in the room that were acquired this offseason, it could be an uphill battle to accomplish that feat. However, he has the proper frame to be successful in the defense.
Johnson played 14 seasons in the NFL (13 with the Kansas City Chiefs) where he recorded 1,171 total tackles (103 for loss) and 27.5 sacks. If Cryer can even model one thing after Johnson's skill set, it could be a scary sight for opposing offensive players during the 2024 season.
