MORE THIRD DOWN AND SHORT OPPORTUNITIES

When former Florida State offensive coordinator Kenny Dillingham was with the Seminoles, he used to express the importance of staying ahead of the chains. There were numerous times last season when the Seminoles did not convert on first and second down where there were third down and long situations.

Often, Trey Benson had something out of nothing. In several games this past season, there were times when head football coach Mike Norvell and offensive coordinator/offensive line coach Alex Atkins talked in the post-game conferences about telling Benson to be patient.

The former Oregon transfer had instances where he would average two yards per carry. Then he would bust out a long gain. This was a product of the offensive line. This is a very experienced offensive line which did not generate much push at the point of attack.

With another year of development, it should be a situation where the offensive line will give the playmakers clear running lanes. While I discussed Uiagalelei's ability to push the ball downfield, the coaching staff should give the wide receivers simpler routes to get the football in their hands.

Given that short routes are coming, we could see more third down and short situations where the offensive line will have to protect better.
