A few days ago, we wrote about one contract detail with James Franklin taking the Virginia Tech job that favored FSU. It was the offsetting language in his contract with Penn State that allowed him to take another coaching job.
Penn State only paid about nine million instead of 49 million, and Franklin has the same agent as Mike Norvell, Jimmy Sexton.
That meant Sexton was willing to work with Penn State to negotiate the buyout, which means he could be willing to do the same with Mike Norvell and FSU.
There’s another coach who Sexton represents, Memphis head coach Ryan Silverfield, and Silverfield has emerged as a potential candidate for the Arkansas job:
Pete Thamel just said Eric Morris, Ryan Silverfield, Alex Golesh, & Kane Wommack are the 4 names that could come to a resolution in the coming days.

Great.
Silverfield has the most impressive head coaching record of the four names. Here’s where it gets interesting: if Silverfield took the Arkansas job, would Mike Norvell have interest in going back to Memphis as its head coach?
He spoke glowingly of his time at Memphis when he arrived at FSU, and Memphis folks loved everything about Norvell and were happy he was getting the opportunity to coach at an elite brand in college football.
Mike Norvell has similar offsetting language in his contract as James Franklin, which means they could avoid paying that huge buyout if he took the Memphis job (or any job).
If Jimmy Sexton can secure Mike Norvell another coaching gig, FSU could be off the hook for that huge buyout, and they’ll know what the salary range is for the new coaching staff and roster management.
Just speculating, but FSU Athletics Director Michael Alford is no dummy. I wouldn't be surprised if this is what they have been working on the entire time behind the scenes. It's not like Jimmy Sexton isn't the agent for most of these top coaches. It's like he's the puppetmaster controlling all of the strings waiting for the dominoes to fall to put his guys in new spots once it's clear it's not going to work out with their current gig.
