One cheap way Florida State may add talent from transfer portal if they choose

Probably worth doing it if they find the right fit.

Florida State coaches have been busy with high school recruiting as they had their first Junior Days this month. However, they’re pulling double duty as they still have a couple of roster spots available to meet the 105-player limit.

While the transfer portal closed a couple of weeks ago for players to enter, players in the portal can still sign with teams. The only drawback now is that they will miss spring practice/camp because most schools have already started their spring semesters.

That could work in Florida State’s favor. FSU still needs depth and talent in the defensive trenches. These transfer portal players don’t have a home and should be eager to join a program this summer. If the Florida State back office does its homework, it should be able to find a couple of gems they can sign on the cheap.

It’s either sign with a team or not play football anywhere at this point. There are a few who FSU recruited while they were in high school remaining in the portal. FSU could lean on those relationships to improve the roster without spending a ton of money.

Here are a handful of guys who meet the criteria:

  • Artavius Jones (DL)-Miami (recruited out of HS)
  • Wilky Denaud (DE)-FAU (recruited out of HS)
  • Dylan Brooks (DE)-Kansas (recruited out of HS)

Florida State needs to add some depth and talent in the trenches. Can they find some talent on the cheap hiding in the portal?

Jones has three years of eligibility remaining and could serve as a depth piece this year while building towards the future. Denaud has two years of eligibility remaining, with some production. Brooks is a former top 120 player who has battled injuries the past two years.

There are probably others they can do research on to see if they’d be worth the hassle. It’s worth a look, considering they still need some help in that area.
