Two matches, two sweeps this past weekend for the Florida State volleyball team, as a key player reached another career milestone. Outside hitter Kyleene Filimaua successfully notched her 1,000th career dig for the Seminoles against Wake Forest after recording eight digs in the match. Florida State additionally defeated the Demon Deacons for the 20th time in a row.

Filimaua, a senior, has been an important contributor for Florida State since joining the team, playing 401 sets for the program after the match against Wake Forest. The outside hitter has been a key piece of the Seminoles' attack the past two seasons, averaging 3.79 kills per set in 2025. Filimaua is currently on track to finish the 2026 season with roughly 458 kills, which would be a new career-high.

Etching her name into the record books is nothing new for Filimaua, as becoming the 14th Seminole to ever reach 1,000 career digs is just her latest accomplishment. The outside hitter had 443 kills during the 2025 season, which is the eighth-most in Florida State history. Filimaua also averaged 4.35 points per set last season, which is the ninth-most in program history.

Filimaua is also an accomplished member of the beach volleyball team, with a career record of 27-11 in two seasons.

Florida State could be on the cusp of a special season behind Filimaua's success

There are more pieces to the Seminoles' puzzle than just Filimaua, but her presence on the court provides the team with a much-needed layer of confidence. Filimaua is the anchor of the team, and even when she struggles, she is still arguably the most valuable player to the program due to all the boxes she checks off.

Florida State will need a full-team effort, and perhaps even some elevated performances from Filimaua, to properly navigate the upcoming schedule. The Seminoles are currently sixth in the ACC, but must play three of the top five teams in the conference in the next five matches. A quick journey out of the conference for a match against Jacksonville gives Florida State time to breathe, but the remaining ACC schedule is a difficult one.

The Seminoles kick off the tough road with matches against Georgia Tech and Clemson this weekend in the Tully Gymnasium. Florida State went 1-2 last season against the likes of the Yellow Jackets and the Tigers, including a loss during Senior Day. There will be plenty of motivation to take down Clemson, but first, the team needs to find a way to defeat Georgia Tech, which they were unable to do last season.

After the first two matches, the challenges intensify as Florida State will face No. 2 Pittsburgh, No. 6 SMU, and No. 3 Louisville in the matter of a week. The Seminoles are 1-1 against ranked teams this season, with an early upset over Kansas and a recent loss to Florida. Last season, Florida State won three sets in four matches against Pittsburgh, SMU, and Louisville.

If Florida State can avoid three losses in that string of matches, the team would be in a much better position heading into the second half of the schedule. Aside from tough matches against North Carolina and Stanford, Florida State will mainly be playing against the bottom half of the ACC.
