Is this sophomore pass catcher a "Tier One" wide receiver for the Seminoles?

This pass catcher could be a scary sight for opposing defenses.

FSU FOOTBALL OFFENSE

Injuries are a part of the game when playing a contact sport. The issue is that you don't want to have adversity with a position group that might be lacking in depth. I thought that it was a bummer to see sophomore wide receiver Lawayne McCoy get injured this offseason.

McCoy was starting to come into his own, but the injury set him back, and he missed the Alabama and East Texas A&M contests with a lower-body issue. The Miami native only recorded six receptions for 52 yards, but it is important to note that hardly anyone had an impact last year.

This was supposed to be a sizable jump from Year 1 to Year 2 for McCoy as offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn thought that he would be a meaningful contributor.

LAWAYNE MCCOY

Head football coach Mike Norvell spoke to the media on Tuesday, where he highlighted that McCoy got some extensive work recently. This is an encouraging sign as the Seminoles could have him in some form or fashion versus a conference opponent.

The goal seems to be that he could be available next week against Kent State if they continue to ramp him up. Norvell even mentioned that the youngster was a "Tier 1 type of guy" for the Seminoles in 2025, which was an eye-opening quote for me.

Florida State already has weapons for quarterback Thomas Castellanos in the offense, such as Duce Robinson, Squirrel White, Jayvan Boggs, Jaylin Lucas, Gavin Sawchuk, Ousmane Kromah, Randy Pittman, and Micahi Danzy (among many others).

Having McCoy in that mix could have the Seminoles' offense even scarier than it already is. I hope that the coaching staff takes the slow approach with welcoming back the youngster to the offense, but it could be a big update for Florida State.
