JOEY VOLINI HAS BEEN A STAR
Head baseball coach Link Jarrett had a decision to make on the pitching staff, as he had three capable starters to choose from: Jaime Arnold, Wes Mendes, and Joey Volini.
Coach Jarrett elected to go with redshirt junior pitcher Joey Volini in the Super Regional road matchup versus Oregon State. The Super Regional is a three-game series where the Seminoles had to travel to Corvallis, Oregon.
Florida State had to say goodbye to Dick Howser Stadium after USC didn't get the job done versus Oregon State. In the contest versus Mississippi State at home, superstar pitcher Jaime Arnold gave one of his best performances of the season.
LINK JARRETT WAS A MASTERMIND
Arnold would be on short rest if Coach Jarrett decided to play him earlier. As you would imagine, the talented potential top-three pick would likely not have his best stuff. This is why he chose to play Volini instead.
You get what you get from the redshirt junior. However, the former South Florida transfer had a masterful performance versus the Beavers on Friday afternoon as he recorded 6.2 innings with seven hits on one earned run. He finished with eight strikeouts and had Oregon State swinging and missing all night.
The home run by Myles Bailey in the sixth inning gave the Seminoles a 2-1 lead in the road environment. Florida State has a chance to capture Game 1 of the Super Regional and then have Jaime Arnold finish the series in Game 2.
While it might have looked like a no-brainer, it takes a lot of courage to decide because Volini is 2-6 in his last eight appearances. However, this is why Link Jarrett gets paid to make the tough choices.
