What’s the plan at quarterback for FSU going into the 2026 season? Mike Norvell mentioned they planned to move forward at the position with Thomas Castellanos appealing his denial of another year with the NCAA.
That means one of two things. They will go with redshirt freshman Kevin Sperry, or entertain another transfer portal quarterback for the third consecutive year. The two portal quarterbacks haven’t worked out, but FSU would literally have no experience or experienced depth at the position if they went with Kevin Sperry.
That’s even if Brock Glenn doesn’t enter the transfer portal, because he hasn’t shown any semblance of progression over the past few years.
That likely means they’re going the transfer portal route and have already shown interest in some players. The crazy thing is that the number of experienced and talented quarterbacks announcing plans to enter the portal is growing by the day, and there's two weeks remaining before the portal officially opens.
There are two questions. Can FSU properly evaluate the fit to maximize success for the 2026 season? Will they spend the money to make it happen if they do?
FSU has chosen the cheap route over the past two years, opting for experienced veterans with limits in major areas. DJ Uiagalelei wasn’t too mobile, especially after suffering a new injury, and was always wildly inaccurate. Thomas Castellanos was mobile but also inaccurate and injury-prone.
We wrote why Gus Malzahn’s offense stalled against the better competition in his first year at FSU. A better quarterback probably nets FSU at least three more wins in 2025. Who they target in the transfer portal will tell you all you need to know about how they feel about the 2026 season.
