Florida State coaches have a solid recruiting class after finishing the 2024 season with a 2-10 record. The Noles rank No. 14 nationally, with 26 commits. FSU had one composite five-star player and several blue-chip players before the latest recruiting rankings update in the industry.
However, the highest-rated FSU commit, Chauncey Kennon, is no longer ranked a five-star player after dropping from No. 26 overall to No. 41 over the past couple of months.
How does a player who became a composite five-star player in September get dropped that far in a short amount of time? The composite ranking is a combination of all the recruiting services, and it seems that players committed to teams in the SEC or B1G receive some favoritism.
A prime example is former FSU commit Jay Timmons, whom we highlighted a few days ago. Timmons was a three-star and then received a four-star when he flipped to FSU, but then received a fifth star a week after flipping his commitment to Ohio State. A recruiting service gave him a fifth star even though he’s missed most of his senior year with an injury.
Is it a coincidence that only one ACC team ranks inside the top 10? That’s only because Miami added a commitment to push them into the No. 10 spot, but they also took 30 commits to get to that ranking.
There is no rhyme or reason to the increase or decreases in ranking. There needs to be some type of explanation when recruiting rankings get updated, otherwise, it just seems like some folks who have no background in talent evaluation just making up stuff to fit whatever agenda they want to push.
