FSU football: Why Kevin Sperry continues to look like the future at quarterback

Looks like the writing is on the wall with when he went into the game.

Many FSU fans have hated on FSU quarterback coach Tony Tokarz for the lack of development at quarterback. However, there’s nothing they can say about freshman Kevin Sperry. It also points to the fact that it was more about the lack of a solid offensive line to actually develop behind than Tokarz’s inability to develop quarterbacks. We wrote about that in the offseason here.

Kevin Sperry looks like the better of the two backup quarterbacks through three games. If the play was even, you’d still take Sperry because he’s only a freshman, and Brock Glenn has been in college since 2023. We respect that Glenn has stayed at FSU and stuck it out through the hard times.

However, Sperry looks like the future at FSU. He came into the game first when Thomas Castellanos left with an injury scare. That was one question we had after he was the first to enter the game off the bench against East Texas A&M.

He was efficient, completing four of his five passes for 64 yards. It’s the poise and decision-making that portend to his future at FSU, and we haven’t talked about his ability to create with his legs. Sperry generally looks decisive and confident wherever he’s throwing the ball. It’s not like he’s a checkdown king, because the throw to Elijah Moore on Saturday was 18 yards towards the sidelines.

However, the quick passes in the flats are out nearly immediately and on target, which gives the receiver an opportunity to make the first defender miss in space. Yes, the competition has been poor, but we couldn’t have asked for much better from a freshman QB. He’s not exactly Thomas Castellanos, but he possesses a similar skillset, and we see what that looks like in Gus Malzahn’s offense.

The future is bright in the QB room in Tallahassee!
