Rushing Game
We knew Gus Malzahn would run the ball successfully. He has done it at every stop, especially with FSU offensive line coach Herb Hand in the mix. They have a solid stable of talented running backs, but the only question was how fast the FSU offensive line would gel together.
We’ve heard Malzahn mention they didn’t practice much together in the spring, and it wasn’t until fall camp that they started working together. Communication is a huge part of that unit’s success, and playing a talented defensive front like Alabama gave pause.
However, FSU’s success against Alabama provided a new confidence as to what this running game could be. The reserve offensive linemen looked solid in their first action against East Texas A&M, and that’s promising for the future.
FSU has averaged 5.91 yards per rush through two games. Much of that is bolstered by Micahi Danzy’s big runs. Freshman Ousmane Kromah averages 5.67 yards per rush, and Gavin Sawchuk averages 4.5.
Thomas Castellanos and Jaylin Lucas average 4.25 per rush. The running game has shown the ability to run in every situation, and that’s something that can’t be said for FSU in the past few years.
