Special Teams
The 2025 version of the FSU football team has been impressive in nearly every aspect through two games. The team plays hard and exudes physicality on both sides of the ball. The consistency is something to behold compared to last season. However, the phase we continue to have the most questions about revolves around special teams.
It’s not surprising, because FSU lost two All-Americans from that unit. The sample size isn’t large, but there have been enough moments to notice there are major areas to improve. In particular, the punt return and kickoff return game. Punter Mac Chiumento hasn’t been needed much, but we need more than the 41.67-yard average.

Jaylin Lucas has flashed at punt return a couple of times, but has also let several punts hit the ground, costing valuable field position and a turnover. We know Mike Norvell has tried to give the guys some grace about catching short punts, but they must get in the habit of fielding every punt possible.
FSU averaged 18.33 yards per kickoff return on three attempts, and two of those were against East Texas A&M. Neither phase may get a ton of work in this game, but they must start capitalizing on these opportunities.
Field position could become crucial once the competition improves.
