FSU football: Fans react to Gus Malzahn resigning from UCF to become OC at FSU
By Kelvin Hunt
FSU football has its new offensive coordinator, and it's a big name, UCF head coach Gus Malzahn. Pete Thamel broke the news earlier Saturday evening.
Mike Norvell's job is on the line if he doesn't turn things around, and nothing is more important than fixing the FSU offense.
Malzahn is a proven offensive mind that Mike Norvel trusts. He's been a head coach in the SEC, and Big 12, and gave Mike Norvell a shot as a graduate assistant when he was the offensive coordinator at Tulsa.
A lot of Mike Norvell's offense has Malzahn's fingerprints all over it. Malzahn is a proven play-caller and Norvell will feel comfortable handing those duties over so he can concentrate on a bigger scope of the FSU program.
Malzahn also has experience recruiting in the Southeast and has ties to many potential players who may enter the transfer portal. His offenses have been in the top 30 over the last two years at UCF, with one of the better rushing attacks.
Fan Reaction
The UCF offense was explosive in 2023, averaging 6.50 yards per play (No. 20 nationally). They averaged 30.4 points per game and 5.77 yards per rush, which ranked No. 6 nationally.
Some folks may wonder why Malzahn would leave a head coaching job to take an offensive coordinator job, and that's a valid question. However, the Big 12 conference gets zero respect nationally, and the chances to win a national championship are relatively small.
Malzahn was the head coach at Auburn, who FSU defeated for the 2013 National Championship. If you remember, that offense gave a talented FSU defense fits all game. I like the hire, and I'm excited to see who they surround him with.
