FSU football: Does Mike Norvell really have an offseason plan?
By Cole Kruger
Coming off Saturday's defeat to the Miami Hurricanes, Mike Norvell stated on Monday morning, "Come December, we have a plan," which begs the question. Does Mike Norvell actually have a plan?
Saturday's loss was much of the same old, same old that we have seen from the Seminoles this season, as they struggled immensely on both sides of the ball. FSU was officially eliminated from any bowl game contention with the loss, as they fell to 1-7 on the season. Out of five seasons coaching here at FSU, three of them have been losing seasons under Norvell. Many times on the broadcast on Saturday, Norvell was visibly frustrated. He was seen yelling at DC Adam Fuller after the defense got caught with too many men on the field, and right after that, he was visibly angry during a Miami timeout.
This body language is incredibly discouraging to see, especially coming from the leader of the team. Week after week, it seems like FSU has no plan going into these games, as was evident when Norvell benched QB Brock Glenn in favor of Luke Kromenhoek, only to put Glenn back in the game in the fourth quarter.
Glenn finished 5/18, only passing for 54 yards and running for 22 yards. Luke Kromenhoek went 6/14 with 61 yards passing and 71 rushing yards. Neither QB got any help from the wide recievers, who have been terrible in recent weeks. The fact that only 11 total passes were completed throughout this game against a very underwhelming Miami defense says enough about the offense.
With the offense playing so poorly, the defense was put on the field for most of the game, and was not the reason the Noles lost this game. Despite the altercation with DC Adam Fuller, it would not be smart of Norvell to get rid of Fuller, if he is apart of the "plan" Norvell says he has for December. Besides Fuller, Norvell might need to can the rest of the staff. Alex Atkins, Ron Dugans, and Tony Tokarz all need to be off this staff come December.
Although there is little hope for the rest of the FSU season, hopefully Norvell sees what the team has in young players like Landen Thomas, and potentially the QB of the future in Luke Kromenhoek. Along with seeing the young guys play, we'll see if Norvell does indeed have a "plan" which could potentially include a coaching staff overhaul.
