Can FSU stop the run effectively?
There’s no question that Alabama will rely on its running game to protect Ty Simpson as much as possible. They will probably sprinkle some Simpson runs to give FSU something else to think about on defense. However, I don’t see Kalen Deboer putting the game on Simpson’s shoulders to win it.
However, that’s what FSU defensive coordinator Tony White will attempt to do. FSU struggled against teams that could run the ball, especially those with mobile quarterbacks.
If they can stop or contain the Alabama rushing attack, it’s a good sign for the Noles. They have ample bodies to throw at the Crimson Tide in the trenches. However, the question is how effective can they be?
The FSU front seven will play an important role in the defense's success, but the safety coming downhill in the run game will play a huge part too. FSU was soft against the run last year, took poor angles, and missed too many tackles. Tony White hangs his hat on stopping the run, and Saturday will be a good barometer as to what to expect.
