FSU football: Big hire! Offensive line coach Herb Hand following Gus Malzahn to Tally
By Kelvin Hunt
FSU football has a few open positions remaining on its staff going into Monday, but a massive one got filled. FSU will hire Herb Hand to replace Alex Atkins as its new offensive line coach.
Why is that important? Hand was the offensive line coach at UCF with FSU's new offensive coordinator, Gus Malzahn.
The two have produced some of the best-rushing offenses in the country while at UCF. However, more importantly, Herb Hand knows what offensive linemen are supposed to look like. He has been the offensive line coach or OC at places like Tulsa, Vanderbilt, Penn State, Auburn, and Texas.
Hand has had multiple offensive linemen win awards and has sent numerous guys to the NFL.
This is a coach offensive linemen will want to play for because he has a proven track record of success. He's a bit on the older side at 56 years old, but most offensive linemen are less concerned about the glitz and glam that comes with recruiting. They want to know if they can get developed and get on the field, and Hand can get that done.
I expect Hand to attract some quality guys in the transfer portal, which is the biggest need for FSU in this offseason. They need to take multiple guys, and probably why this news broke with the transfer portal officially opening on Monday.
I expect Hand and Malzahn to make an immediate impact on the FSU offensive line. It'll be interesting to see the caliber of players they attract over the next few weeks in the transfer portal and high school recruiting.
